F. M. Thomas, Chemical Company Founder Dies
Franklin Mumma Thomas, Sr., 1003 The Terrace, a co-founder of Central Chemical Corp., died at the Washington County Hospital this morning after a short illness, aged 86.
Thomas along with his father founded Central Chemical in 1910. He was chairman of the board of directors at the time of his death.
He was born in Hagerstown, the son of Daniel and Susan Mumma Thomas and lived here all of his life.
He was a lifetime member of the Church of the Brethren and had taught Sunday school there for many years.
Thomas was chairman of the board of directors of the Maryland National Bank and vice president of teh board of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.
During his life Thomas had been president of the community concerts, president of the Rotary Club chairman of the ration board during World War II, a trustee of St. James School, a board director of the Hagerstown Junior College, a member of the board of the Volunteers of America, and treasurer-director of the San Mar Orphanage.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his wife, Grace Howard Thomas, a son, Franklin M. Thomas, Jr., and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held from the Church of the Brethren Monday at 2:30 p.m. with the Revs. DeWitt Miller and Joseph Quesenberry officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Minnich Funeral Home until 5 p.m. Sunday when the body will be taken to the family residence. The family will receive friends there from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Church of the Brethren.
