NEWPORT NEWS - Clare Laverne Mumaw Jr., 64, of 867 Moyer Road, died peacefully at home Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 16, 1942, to Clare and Edith Yoder Mumaw. He attended Warwick River Christian School and graduated from Warwick High School in 1960.
Laverne married Anna Josephine Trost on Dec. 2, 1967. They had two sons, Robert and Joseph. The family farmed in Charles City County and at the former Yoder Dairy until 1989. Laverne worked as a salesman at Southeast Rope and Rigging, even through most of his illness.
Laverne was a self-educated man who loved to read and learn. He found the answer to any question, and there was no task he wouldn't try. He had a talent for building and fixing things, often turning junk into useable items. The garden in Laverne's back yard was filled with exotic plants such as kiwi and rare varieties of berries. He shared his love of gardening with his family, showing his children and grandchildren how to nurture growing things.
A singer and harmonica player, Laverne was a member of the Lucas Creek Gospel Band. His ministry in music touched countless lives. While hospitalized, he pulled his IV stand into the hallway and sang with his band. Fellow patients and staff members were encouraged by the faith he showed in the face of illness.
A lifelong member and elder at Warwick River Mennonite Church, Laverne was dedicated to serving God and others. No one was a stranger to him, and he could easily turn a casual conversation into a lasting friendship. Wherever he went, he left the handprint of God on those he encountered. Cancer could not take away his faith or his ministry, which only grew stronger as his body grew weaker. Often he shared stories and music during church services, telling about how God was working through his illness to touch the lives of others.
He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife, Anna; two sons, Robert Mumaw and his wife, Karen Hinson Mumaw, and Joseph Mumaw, all of Denbigh; a daughter-in-law, Robin Mumaw of Dare; two brothers, John Mumaw and his wife, Lori, of Harrington, Del., and Chester Mumaw of Bridgewater; six grandchildren, Scott, Nicholas, Melissa Ann and Rebecca Mumaw, and Andrew and Alexander Crumly; and a host of other relatives, friends, business associates and members of his church family.
Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News. Services will be 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Warwick River Mennonite Church, 250 Lucas Creek Road, Newport News. Interment will take place at the church cemetery, followed by a fellowship meal at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Warwick River Mennonite Church Brotherhood Fund. Messages of consolation may be written at www.dailypress.com.
