Sammy was accidentally shot in the head and killed by his playmate, Robert Little. The two boys were waiting in the car for Robert's parents when Robert discovered a revolver in the glove box. He removed the gun and squeezed the trigger with both fingers. The gun suddenly fired and the bullet struck Samuel Mumma in the head. Sammy was taken to the hospital, but died.
