Richard Glenn Huffman, 87, of Unity Township, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at his home. He was born Jan. 5, 1927, at Beatty, a son of the late Glenn S. and Morna G. (Mumau) Huffman. Richard joined the Navy in 1944 and served as radioman aboard the USS LST 743 in the Asian-Pacific Theater. Following discharge, he was employed in the records section at the Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, DC. For several years, he was a DC bus driver before returning home to more than 30 years of employment at Latrobe Steel Company. Richard is best known as the family genealogist. He has written, printed and published five family genealogies: Jacob Huffman, 1767-1968; George Muma (Mumau), 1732-1971; Conrad Coder, 1751-1985; and Stough (two volumes), 1650-1994. His work included extensive research at courthouses, public, seminary and church libraries, historical societies, miles of cemetery walking and personal correspondence across America and abroad including a trip to Germany. Richard also printed and published the St. James Lutheran Church at Youngstown, PA 1820 to 1985 church and cemetery records. He is a member of the Westmoreland County Historical Society and enjoyed helping others research and locate their families and always shared any and all information he might have on their ancestors. Richard is survived by his sisters, Norma Lemmon and husband, Paul, of Latrobe, and Judith Armel and husband, Nevin, of Unity Township; 14 nieces and nephews; 22 great-nieces and nephews; and 10 great-great-nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 2072 Route 130, Pleasant Unity, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Adrian D. Armel officiating. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Westmoreland County Historical Society, 362 Sand Hill Road, Greensburg, PA 15601.
