Mary Catherine Burns became pregnant by Elmer Mumma and she gave birth to a son named John . After John was born, she lived on her brother's farm until she became the housekeeper for Charles H. Bell, whose previous wives had died, leaving him with a young family to raise. He was living in Kansas at that time and she moved there with her child, John Willard Mumma, to be his housekeeper. After several years, Charles married Mary and John was adopted by Charles Bell. Charles and Mary then had a number of children together. Around 1907, Charles and Mary moved to New York with their family.
The fact that John Willard Mumma Bell was the illegitimate child of Elmer Mumma was confirmed through DNA testing of one of John's descendants.
