John was the illegitimate child of Mary Catherine Burns. After John was born, she lived on her brother's farm until she became the housekeeper for Charles H. Bell, whose previous wives had died, leaving him with a young family to raise. He was living in Kansas at that time and she moved there with her child, John, to be his housekeeper. After several years, Charles married Mary and John was adopted by Charles Bell. Charles and Mary then had a number of children together. Around 1907, Charles and Mary moved to New York with their family.
The fact that Elmer had an illegitimate child was confirmed through DNA testing of one of his descendants.
