--------------------------
MUMMA, JOSEPH DEAN May 10, 1927 to October 14, 2005 Joseph Dean Mumma passed away peacefully at his home in Del Mar on October 14, 2005, with his family by his side after a 14 year long valiant battle against cancer. He was born in Dighton, Kansas, but lived in San Diego for the last 65 years of his life. After marrying Peggy St. Sure, he graduated from San Diego State College with a BS degree in Business Administration and was a proud Brother of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He served as a vice president for VanCamp and Westgate Corporation, only to later own his own albacore canning company known as Personal Pack Tuna. He later started Shelter Island Properties and Shelter Island Financial. He also managed several large local Catholic retirement homes, as well as his own property investments. An avid traveler, he loved planning the trips as much as the trips themselves. His favorite locations were Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Canada. He loved to take his grandchildren on birthday trips which included France, Hawaii, Utah, Colorado and Canada. He was very involved in all of his grandchildren's activities and sports. Joe was a talented skier, golfer and tennis player, and always had a positive attitude, words of encouragement, and a big smile for those around him. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Peggy St. Sure, his beloved children Larry Mumma (Missy) and Debby Kirk (Mike) and grandchildren, Greg, Brian, Ashley Kirk and Jake and Chelsea Mumma, and is also survived by his brother, Gail Mumma. Private family services will be held on October 20, 2005 at Mission San Luis Rey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Diego Hospice.
