The 1870 & 1880 census lists his surname as MUGHMAW. Initially that appeared to be an error, however several of his sons, William and Joseph, continued to use that spelling even to this time. I have tried to use the common spelling that his descendants used during their life.

Apparently, John Mumaugh began a relationship with Mary Wilson in Hancock County and she had a child fathered by him in 1899 while he was still married to Jessie Oungst. John fathered another child with Mary at the beginning of 1902. John and his first wife, Jessie, divorced and John married Mary Wilson using the name of "Charles H. Mumaugh" as recorded on the marriage registry and certificate. They married 2 months after the birth of their 2nd child. After their marriage, Charles and his 2nd family used the "Mumaw" spelling of their surname.
