1851 Hocking Twp: John Mumaugh, George Mumaugh, Andrew Mumaugh, Elias Mumaugh
In the 1850 census of Hocking Township of Fairfield Co., Ohio, Elias is living in what appears to be a boarding house with a number of other young men and women. All of his brothers and sister are living in other households as well as his father, suggesting that his mother had died by this time. A curious fact is that Elias Mumaugh's uncle, John Rees Mumaugh was the 1850 census enumerator for Hocking Township. You would think he would get the spelling and names correct for his relatives.
The 1850 census suggests a birth year of 1827, yet the 1870 and 1880 census would suggest a birth year of 1821. His mother was born in 1810 which would favor a birth year of 1827. When he married again in 1897, it says he was 67 years old which suggests about 1830. So, either Elias is not attached to the correct parents or his birth age was not correctly known by his wife, the one who likely talked to the census takers. Neither Elias nor Susanna were literate. I have selected a birth year of 1827 for him which is in keeping with the 1850 census and his mothers birth year.

The 1870 & 1880 census lists his surname as MUGHMAW. Initially that appeared to be an error, however several of his sons, William and Joseph, continued to use that spelling even to this time. I have tried to use the common spelling that his descendants used during their life.

Death of Elias Mughmaw

Elias Mughmaw, who was run over by an interuban on a North Anderson bridge while ther visiting relatives, died of blood poison Friday morning at 1:30, after laying in the hospital for two weeks. One foot and the toes on the ohter foot wer amputated after the accident. The remains were brought Saturday night to the home of his sonk, William Mughmaw, near Santa Fe, and the funeral service in chard of Rev. Kiter was held from the U. B. Church at North Grove Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Burial was made at North Grove.
