There is controversy surrounding Eliza Mumaw. Several problems exist. First, the marriage of her "parents" is recorded as 31 May 1866, long after Eliza's estimated birth about 1857, but she is clearly listed in their household in 1870. The second problem is her parents are listed as Isaac and Pamelia on her marriage record to John W, Brown. In her second marriage, the name of "John" is listed as her father. This suggests a possible recording error of her father's name in the first marriage record. Another possibility could be that she did have different parents who died when she was young and she was raised in the household of John and Milly Mumaw. In the 1880 census, she and her husband, John Brown are living next door to John and Milly Mumaw, continuing to suggest a strong and close relationship. Because of this and without further evidence to the contrary, Eliza is listed as the 1st child of John & Milly Mumaw. [NOTE: findagrave lists her maiden name as Coffman]
