His family migrated to Illinois when he was young. In 1873, he migrated to California and farmed in various places on the Sacramento River and in the Dunnigan area. But, by 1879, he returned to Mt. Morris, Ogle Co., IL:. In 1879, he married Alice Henshaw. In 1884, he and his wife migrated to an area near Dunnigan, California where he purchased 785 acres and rented another 640 acres. He farmed grain, alfalfa and sugar beets.
