This is the top person in this branch and little is known about this individual. There is strong evidence that suggests this branch is not part of the Mumma branch that descended from John Mumma of Baltimore. This is the only Mumma branch who used the Mummaugh spelling.
We know that the three girls are sisters. This information is obtained from the obituary of Rachel Mumma Davis. It says she had two sisters still living at the time of her death. They were "Barbara Shockney of Arlington and Mrs. Elias Wakeland of Baltimore". Barbara Mumma is listed on the Baltimore Marriages list as having married Stephen Shockney Nov. 14, 1834. Eliza Ann Mumma was also listed as marrying John Wakeland Feb. 5, 1844. The other interesting fact is Shockney researchers have suggested that Barbar Shockney's surname may have been Mummaugh. Since these four children are close in age, all were listed in the Baltimore marriage records with the surname of Mumma and they all lived very close together in Carroll County, Maryland suggests that they are all siblings. The 3 girls are definately sisters and I believe there is strong evidence George Mummaugh was their brother.
It is also interesting to note that the same given names are often repeated in all of their descendants.
Upon reviewing potential candidates as the father of the four children, there is strong evidence that it was Adam Mumma, the son of Adam Mumma born 1773 or one of his brothers. In the 1800 census for Frederick County, Adam "Mumaw" is listed as between 26 and 45 "with children". We know one of his children was Adam, baptized 1794. He is listed in the St. Mary's Church records. That church was in Silver Run, Frederick County, now Carroll County. Adam Mumma is also assessed for 20 acres of the "Ohio " tract in the Piney Creek, Taneytown District of Maryland in 1798. From this we know that a Mumma family was living in the Carroll County area of Maryland around the 1800's.
From a review of census information, an Adam Mumma is found in the 1820 and 1830 of Germany Township of Adams County, Pennsylvania. This township is located just above Frederick (Carroll) County, MD. In the 1820 census, Adam Mumma is listed as being older than 45 years and this would fit as Adam the father. In the 1830 census of Germany township, Adam Mumaw is listed as being between the age of 50-60 years of age, there is a female between the age of 60-70 years of age and an unidentified female between the age of 20-30 years of age. Since the father of these children always list their birth state and that of their parents as Maryland, this would rule out Adam the father as a candidate and means it is probably one of his children. A careful search of the Maryland census records of 1800-1830 has not revealed a likely candidate. In fact, essentially no Mummas can be found.
Thus, documented proof does not exist for the connection of all 4 children and it must be considered speculative at this time.
