The marriage of John Davis
Rachel's obit
----------------------
Mrs. Rachael Davis, widow of the late John Davis, died on Wednesday evening, at the residence of her son-in law, Mr. George W. Barber, near Bird Hill, aged 86 years, 6 months, 12 days. Mrs. Davis was for many years a member of Mt. Pleasant M. E. Church, in the burial ground of which her remains were interred yesterday morning, after funeral services, conducted by her pastor. Her grandsons, E. Leonard Davis, James H. Davis, Henry Little, Ezra Little, Wm. N. Barber and Harvey Barber, were the pall-bearers. Mrs. Davis leaves two sons and three daughters - Mr. Harrison Davis, Mrs. Ezra Little, Mr. Elias N. Davis, Mrs. George W. Barber, of this county, and Mrs. Elias B. Shilling, of Woodberry. She also leaves two sisters - Mrs. Barbara Shockney, of Arlington, who is in her 90th year, and Mrs. Elias Wakeland, of Baltimore.
[Note - researchers feel the use of the name "Elias" was an error in the obituary for John Wakeland.]
The 1850 census lists the children of John and Rachel Davis, but it includes a 14 year old girl who would have been 4 years old when John and Rachel married in 1840. The following is likely the census listing for them, but it is unclear who the older woman might be
