Executor's Sale of Farm in the Democratic Advocate March 1883
In 1856 George Mummaugh purchased a farm from John Hoff. Upon George Mummaugh's death in 1883 the property (86 acres more or less known as parts of "Peters Choice", "Speculation", "Helmes Chance", Duttons Desire", "Lanes Bottoms & Hills", "Walkers near Adventure") was sold to John Martin, who deeded the property to the remaining living children (George W., Andrew, Alice, Lewis, Rachael, and Nicholas). At the death of each of these children, their portion was passed on to the remaining siblings and in 1915 Nicholas (the last remaining son of George) bought the remaining interest from the other descendents. The farm remained in Nicolas's family until his son, Walter Nicolas's widow sold the property in 1956 to the Miller Family from Philadelphia, PA. The Miller Family had a riding arena and boarded horses. The farm was sold to the Talbot Family and remains in this family today. Information furnished by Karen Doughty Silverman (great-granddaughter of Nicholas), who lived on the farm until she was four. She remembers the house as a large 250-year-old stone farmhouse with three staircases and a large barn filled with horses and cattle. Sounds beautiful!
The Executor's Sale advertised in the Democratic Advocate Newspaper, Westminster, MD, 24th day of March 1883, states it is improved by a Stone Dwelling, Barn, Spring House near dwelling, Apple Orchard and other fruit, and is located l 1/4 miles from Patapsco Station, on the Western MD Railroad, and adjoins lands of John L. Stull, B. Bond and Jno. W. Barrick and would make a good dairy farm. Board Run passes through the place. It is convenient to churches, schools, post offices, railroad and mills. Andrew J. Mummaugh, Executor.
