According to Dennis Ueckert, his great grandson, Chancy was born in New York on 12 August 1830. He was married twice, first to Elizabeth Moomaw (1851) with whom he had three known children. The family is enumerated in the 1860 US Census of Howard Twp., Cass Co., MI, and 10 years later in the 1870 Federal Census of Sidney, Fremont Co., IA.
After Elizabeth's death in 1873, Chancy married Martha Gage, 20 years his junior and former wife of Lewis Sherman. He is shown as Charles Shafer who married Martha Sherman (1875) in "Fremont County Early Marriages."
Chancy and his new family are shown in the 1880 Federal Census of Hamburg, Fremont Co., IA: Chancy [50, NY, farmer]; Marthy [27, AR]; A. S. (daughter) [8, IA]; Ethel [4, IA]; twins Edger [1 month, IA] and Edmon [1 month, IA]. The daughter, A. S. Shafer, might be Martha's child by her first marriage as her birth occurred three years before Martha's marriage to Chancy.
In about 1889, Chancy moved his family to Boone County, Nebraska, near the town of Albion. He could be the C. H. Shaffer shown in the Farmers' List of the 1890 Nebraska Gazetteer for Boone County. Chancy died there in 1899.
