ELIZABETH MOOMAW
In 1831, Elizabeth, the first child of Jacob and Anna Fisher Moomaw, was born in Giles Co., Virginia. She is undoubtedly one of Jacob's female children listed in the 1840 US Census of Giles County.
Elizabeth moved with her family when Jacob relocated to Grant Co., Indiana, in 1849/1850. She is listed by name as a 19-year-old in the 1850 Federal Census of Grant County.
A year later, on October 18, 1851, Elizabeth married Chancy Shafer, a native of New York. (The 1870 Census indicates Pennsylvania.) The wedding may have occurred in Indiana. However, Chancy's great grandson, Dennis Ueckert, indicates Chancy had moved with his family to Michigan in 1838. More research is needed. Did Elizabeth somehow get to Michigan on her own or with her family?
At any rate, the couple settled in Michigan where three children were born. The family is enumerated in the 1860 US Census of Howard Twp., Cass Co., MI, with ages that do not match later census records: Chancy [39, farm laborer, NY]; Elizabeth [38, VA]; Minerva [9, MI]; George [6, MI]; and Elmira [4, MI].
By 1870 they had moved to Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa, where the rest of Elizabeth's family was living. (Her parents had moved to Iowa in 1856.) Chancy is shown as a 42-year-old farmer with $500 of personal property but no real estate. Elizabeth's age is given as 41, but should be 39. Their children, all born in Michigan, are enumerated as: Katie [17], George [16], and Elmira [14]. Note that Minerva is missing, strangely replaced by Katie. Could this be the same daughter?
Elizabeth died in Iowa in 1873. Chancy would remarry two years later and eventually move with his second family to Boone Co., NE.
