John Mumma Young.-Prominent in business and financial circles in Williamsport, and interested from time to time in many important enterprises, John Mumma Young was born at Middletown, Ohio, Aug. 30, 1845, the son of William and Eliza (Mumma) Young.
The Young family is of German descent, David Young having emigrated to this country during the early days. He settled in Pennsylvania.
William Young was born at Hanover, Pa., in 1803 and died there in 1889. He spent most of his life in the general mercantile business at Middletown, Ohio. His wife, who was born in York County, Pa., died Feb. 4, 1848. Their children were: Mary R. was the wife of William A. Schreyer of Milton, Pa., where she died in 1876, and John Mumma, the subject of this sketch.
After completing his early education at Middletown, Ohio, and Hanover, Pa., John M. Young attended Gettysburg (Pa.) College, being a member of the class of 1865. He later attended the Harvard Law School, and subsequently practiced law at Topeka, KS., and York, Pa. After coming to Williamsport, Mr. Young engaged in manufacturing. He was one of the organizers and general manager of the Williamsport Iron & Nail Company, which was founded in 1883; president of the Williamsport Rail Company; president and treasurer of Sweet's Steel Company; and director of the First National Bank, of Williamsport.
During the Civil War Mr. Young enlisted in 1861 with the Pennsylvania Border Guard at Hanover, Pa. His second enlistment was in 1863 with the Twenty-sixth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The following year he reenlisted and served as a member of Capt. E. B. Sanno's Company, Cavalry, attached to the First Virginia Cavalry.
On Aug. 25, 1868, Mr. Young married Miss Carrie VanPatten, a native of Washington, D. C., the daughter of Charles H. and Amelia Caroline (Harper) VanPatten, natives of New York and Pennsylvania respectively. Mrs. Young, who died Dec. 2, 1923, was graduated from Gettysburg Female Seminary in 1866. She was a direct descendant of Charles Frederick VanPatten, one of the founders of the city of Schenectady, N. Y., and was also related to Carl Hansen Toll, a member from New York to the Colonial Congress, in which he served for 13 years. Through her mother she belonged to the family of Harpers who traced their ancestry back to 965. She was also a descendant of John Harper, who came from England to the United States with William Penn in the ship "Welcome" and settled at Frankford, now a part of Philadelphia. C. H. VanPatten died in 1885, and his wife died in 1865. To John Mumma and Carrie (VanPatten) Young were born eight children, as follows: 1. William, justice in the Children's Court, New York City. 2. Edwin P., an attorney, Towanda, Pa. 3. John P., now engaged in scientific pursuits at Ithaca, N. Y. 4. Mary, resides at home, Williamsport. 5. Charles, V. P., professor, Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y. 6. George H., engineer, Binghamton, N. Y. 7. Carrie V. P., secretary in the Y. W. C. A., Pittsburgh, Pa. 8. Ruth Young Allen, the wife of Carl G. Allen, Williamsport.
Mr. Young Is a Republican and is identified with the Masonic Lodge, Grand Army of the Republic, Ross Club, and the Historical Society of Lycoming County. His wife held membership in the Presbyterian Church and was an active worker in the Y. W. C. A.
