As early as the 1830 Federal Census Jacob shows up as head of household in Franklin County, Peters Township, PA with 1 female 20 - 29 and no children.
We know by County Tax Records that Jacob was taxed for owning 350 acres in 1838 in Bedford County, Licking Creek Township, PA. (Fulton County was carved out of Bedford in 1850.)
In the 1840 Bedford County census, Licking Creek township, Jacob was listed as Thomas J. Mumau. Possibly there was confusion with the name of his eldest son, Thomas, or this is his true name but went by Jacob. We do not know his middle inital. There is even a remote possibiltiy that this is not Jacob although we know that Jacob owned property in Bedford two years earlier in Licking Creek township.
In the 1840 Bedford County Licking Creek Township Federal Census Jacob has the following people living with him. He is employed in agriculture.
1 male 51 - 60 We do not know who this is, It probably is not Sarah's father since I believe that he died when she was a little girl. It is not Jacob's father since he is in Franklin County in the 1840 census.
3 male 0 - 4 Although ages are not correct we assume these to be sons Thomas (10), George (8), and James (6).
1 female 0 - 4 This would be Barbara (3).
1 female 20 - 29 This would be Sarah.
George W.'s, obituary states that his father Jacob was from Franklin County and that Jacob and Sarah had 11 children. Only 8 are known and listed based on census records starting in 1850 when the names of children were listed.
The 1850 Licking Creek township, Fulton County, PA census indicates that there is 59 years old David Mumma born in PA living with a Barbara Mumma 59, George Mumma 32, Elizabeth 4, and Elizabeth Straits 22 within a few lines from Jacob (22 MAR 1811), Jacob's wife Sarah and their children.
The 1860 census indicates that Jacob and Sarah Mumma's household now has 72 years old, born in PA, David Mumma living with them.

Election results for County Coroner in the October 18, 1865 issue of the The Fulton Republican notes that Mumma won 855 votes to Carl's 682.
Found on Fulton County Commisioner's Stationary under their letterhead, at the courthouse as well as at the Fulton County Historical Society (FCHS), It is noted that Jacob Mumma was elected County Coroner 1864-1865. (letterhead found by Don Lake, delake@erols.com)
In 1870 Jacob and Sarah are not living with any of their own children; Merrick Rush 16 MW MC (mail carrier) is living with them.
1874 Obituary found by Ed Bub. It indicates that Jacob died from being run over by a train. He was on his way to Illinois to visit relatives (his brother, David), riding on the very train that ran him over. Assumed to have exited the train door while in slumber state.

Source: Newspaper article about his death indicates that he died on the 4th.
Fulton County Estate Inventories: Files 12 December 1874. recorded in Inventory and Appraisal Docket #1, pages 51, 52. It is interesting to find two books War of 1812 and Rebellion Vol. 1. in Jacob's Inventory Record upon his death in 1874. Also listed are beehives along with all the regular farm equipment and tools that a farmer of this time would own.
His tombstone has the following poem on it:
"Thouth rides on every passing breeze
___e lurks in every flower
Each season has its own disease
It's perils every hour "

Jacob Mumma's property (183 acres) went to auction after his death. There were several family members that desired the property. Samuel H. Hockensmith won the auction for his father-in-law's property for $2,500 on November 3, 1875. Deed Book 8, Pg 445, Court house records, Fulton Co., PA. In 1897 the property was given to the heirs of Daniel Laidig to satisfy a judgement which Daniel Laidig held against Samuel. Deed Book 55, pg 365.
There is a James A. Mumma ABT 1837 (age 23 in the 1860 census) who is married to Sarah ABT 1841 (age 19 in the 1860 census) with child Barbrah ABT 1859 (age 1 in the 1860 census.) They are living in Licking Creek, Fulton County in 1860. Source: Federal Census Fulton County, PA. LC 1028. The reason for putting this info in Jacob's notes is that this James is living next to Jacob and Sarah Mumma in 1860. We do not know anything else about him. Maybe he is a link to the past we do not know about. This is not Jacob's son James A. Mumma. Doug's thought is that this is Jacob's son James A and that he was living in both places in 1860. The census takers could have registered him in both places and just mixed up the wife's name.
