David's middle initial is clearly a P in the original 1850 census. More than likely this is a mistake since no where else does a P show up for his middle name. All other places it is an R.
In the 1860 census he was a farmhand living with Jacob and Sarah Mumma (his parents)
Pension Records pulled at the National Archives June 2002.
David served in the Civil War and was, for a short time, a prisoner of war.
Enlisted February 22, 1862 Company B, 3rd Regiment, PHB (Potomac Home Brigade) MD Infantry as a Private. Mustered in at Warfordsburg, Fulton County, PA and was honorably discharged on February 28, 1864 at Ellicotts Mills, MD. He joined the same unit under the leadership of John W. Cooks Company B, 3rd Regiment, PHB MD Infantry, as a Lieutenant, and was discharged May 29, 1865 in Baltimore, MD.
Records show that he was a prisoner of war, being captured and paroled September 15, 1862 at Harper's Ferry. There also is lengthy documentation and affidavits about the injury he sustained in May 1862. Enoch H. Fohner writes "... injured back while putting out telegraph line." Geo W. Decker of Licking Creek twp at age 53 wrote "on May 1, 1862 I was with claimant putting up telegraph ... Green Spring, West Virginia to Mirorfield while building a raft out of logs of an old house to cross South Branch near Romney VA. I heard claimant complain of hurting his back and have heard him frequently complaining since."
The pension records also note that he was 5'6", 136 lbs, fair complexion, blue eyes, curly brown hair, his occupation was a carpenter, he had a mole under his left eye and he signed his name with his own signature rather than an X like his brother George. His birth date and death date are noted.
There also is a letter written on May 27, 1907 explaining an error on his original pension certificate issued by the Pension Dept. that has his name David R. Mumme and that he had continued communicating to them under this name because of their original mistake. He asks that they issue a new certifcate with the correct name if they want him to correspond with his correct name.
