Merrill graduated from Penn State in 1929 with a degree in Agriculture.
He was never known as Merle as some documents have listed. He always spelt his name, Merrill.
His obit reads:
Merrill D. Mumma, 64, of Greencastle R.D. 2, died at 5 a.m. today at the Chambersburg Hospital. He had been in failing health for several years and was critically ill since being admitted to the hospital, December 10. Mr. Mumma was born at Harrisonville, Fulton County, July 10, 1907, son of the late Charles A. and Francis E. Sipes Mumma. His early life was lived in Fulton County. He was married in June 1936, and had lived in Greencastle R.D. 2 residence since 1942. Mr. Mumma was a graduate of Penn State University where he trained as a teacher. Prior to his retirement in 1965, Mr. Mumma taught vocational agriculture in the Greencastle-Antrim School system for 25 years. Since his retirement from teaching, he was engaged in light farm work at his Greencastle R.D. home.
In addition to his widow, Mrs. Lona D. Brady Mumma, he is survived by these children: C. Harold Mumma, Waynesboro, Edgar M. Mumma, Waynesboro R.D. 4, John E. Mumma Mechanicsburg and Mrs. Lawrence H. Martin, Greencastle R.D. 2. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and a brother George W. Mumma West Virginia.
Private funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Grove Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. Harold W. Myers Jr. The interment will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. There will be no viewing. Waynesboro Record Harold, 08 Jan 1972
