Notes:
Thank you Elizabeth. We all have skeletons in our closets. My great grandfather (Shepherd Phillip King) was a deserter in the Civil War. His version of the story (told to my uncle when he was a child) was that he went to his first battle and was disgusted to be fighting his fellow Americans, so he threw down his rifle and walked home to Ohio. I believe that he and was only 17 years old and got scared in his first battle, so he deserted. He had joined with his older brother. Helen
I know in the 1890 special census he claimed Civil War associated illnesses, but I doubt if that was true. Thanks for sharing this. the family story is that he fell off of a roof he was trying to repair and died a few days later. His wife Margaret was destitute and tried to get a Civil War pension, but was denied since he was a deserter. Therefore she married Frank Moomaw (b. Dec 1855, IN, died 1929 in Shamrock, Creek Co, OK) in 1926. According to my uncles he ran the mill in Shamrock. Helen
NOTE: Effie Mumma is listed in the 1930 census as a widow, 75 yrs old
