Sara Jane Starner
MATTHEWS, NC: Sara Jane Starner, 91 of Matthews, North Carolina, formerly of Ashland passed away, Sunday morning, February 2, 2014 in Novant Health Matthews Medical Center in Matthews, North Carolina with her family by her side.
She was born on October 20, 1922 to the late Milton "Pete" and Helen (nee Walz) Mumaw in Ashland.
Sara graduated from Ashland High School. Following high school, Sara furthered her education at Samaritan Hospital and went on for special training at the Cincinnati General Nursing School. She became a nurse and worked for many years at Samaritan Hospital and also for Dr. George Emery's private practice.
Sara married the love of her life, Roy Starner Jr. on June 1, 1947. The couple shared 63 years of happiness together, prior to his death on October 17, 2010.
Sara left the nursing profession to work beside her husband for Starner Heating where she answered the phone and was in charge of keeping the books.
Sara also taught "Easing Going" fitness classes at the YMCA for more than 23 years.
She was a devoted member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women, Sunday school, and various other church activities and was also a member of the Samaritan Hospital Nurses Association.
She leaves behind her loving son and daughter-in-law, Mark S. (Maxine) Starner of Matthews, North Carolina; two grandsons, Stephen (Eleanor) and Seth Starner of Charlotte, North Carolina; two great grandchildren, Sara Grace, who was named after her great grandmother and Sam Starner; a sister-in-law, Sandy Mumaw of Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her beloved husband, Roy, Sara is preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Ramsey and Mirian Goodale; and one brother, Phil Mumaw.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 322 Cleveland Avenue, Ashland, OH 44805 with Reverend Jeff Coggins and Reverend Patricia Reiter officiating. Following the service, a meal and time of fellowship will be held at the church. She will be laid to rest in the Ashland Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
