Roy Starner Jr., 89, a beloved husband, father and grandfather of Ashland, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at Kingston of Ashland following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Ashland to Roy and Marguerite (nee LeFevre) Starner Sr.
Roy was a 1939 graduate of Ashland High School and has resided in Ashland all of his life.
He worked at Goodyear until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 2, 1942. Roy was an aviation metalsmith, having repaired fighter planes while serving on Guam. He married the love of his life, the former Sara Jane Mumaw, on June 1, 1947.
Roy owned and operated Starner Heating and Air Conditioning for more than 60 years and continued to work up to this year. He will be most remembered for his fair prices and his willingness to always help someone in need. Prior to opening his company, he was employed with Rybolt Furnace and Stahl's Hardware.
Roy was a devoted member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and American Legion in Ashland.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years of marriage, Sara Jane Starner of Ashland; one son, Mark Stephen (Maxine) Starner of Matthews, N.C.; two grandsons, Stephen (Eleanor) Starner and Seth Starner, both of Charlotte, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Sara Grace Starner; and one sister, Mary Katherine Martin.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Marie Dudte and Janet Louise Noel.
A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 322 Cleveland Ave., Ashland, with the Reverends John Guliano and Pat Reiter officiating.
Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 18, 2010, at Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home
Internment will be in Ashland Cemetery, where the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
