Ruth Mumaw Engell, 86, of 1162 Old Turnpike Road, Drums, died Wednesday morning at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community, Drums. Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Nellie (Williams) Mumaw. She graduated from Hazleton High School and Dickinson College and taught at the junior and senior high levels in the Hazleton School District before retiring. After retiring, Mrs. Engell became a member of the Governor's Citizens Health Advisory Board, an agency that helped create health care legislation in Pennsylvania under Gov. Richard Thornburg.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, Frederick J. Engell,, in 1966. Surviving are sons, John F. Engell, San Jose, Calif.; and James T. Engell, Acton, Mass; sister, Grace Snyder, Nuangola; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the gravesite in St. John's Cemetery. No viewing is scheduled. The Rosenstock Funeral Home, 229 W. Broad St., Hazleton, is in charge of the arrangements.
