George E. Johnson, aged 72 years, one month and five days, died in this city Thursday evening, February 5, after a ten days' illness following a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Johnson was born north of this city, December 31, 1853. He married Miss. Allie Britten, of Bellevue, October 19, 1874. To them were born four children, Maurice, of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Gertie Spangler, of this city, Earl, of Hopkins, and Harry, of this city. These survive him, besides five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a half-sister, Mrs. James A. Johnson, of Belding, and five cousins, Wallace and Angie Johnson,, of Illinois, Mrs. Seitzsinger, of Remus, Chas. Johnson, of Barryton. and Mrs. Mary Stevens, of this city. Mr. Johnson was a printer of the "old school," starting his trade on one of the early publications in Allegan. He enjoyed the distinction of setting the first type and doing the first mechanical work on the Emmet County Democrat, when it was established in Petoskey, by the father of H. B. Rose, now proprietor of the Murray tavern. He became associated with The Otsego Union nearly half a century ago, in its second year of publication, working for Charles H. Harris, G. A. Morgan, John D. Woodbeck, and Fairfield and Hendee. When the present editor became associated with the paper in April, 1893, Mr. Johnson was employed upon the paper, and with the exception of about two years in Clinton and Lansing had continuously been associated with the paper. The writer thus had intimate association with Mr. Johnson as an employer for twenty-nine years, and our relations have always been most pleasant. He was a faithful, conscientious employe, honest, industrious and dependable, and he will be greatly missed at The Union office. He was a good man, and in this community where he spent three score and ten yeays we doubt if he had an enemy. The funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clarence E. Spangler, on East Hammond street, last Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. N. Jenkins, pastor of the Baptist church. Interment was made in the family lot in Mountain Home cemetery.
