Samuel is living in the household of Henry Wachter(?), age 52 who is a "Master shoemaker". Samuel is listed as an apprentice shoemaker age 18. This is why he is not listed with his parents in this census.

From the 1880 Federal Census we learn that Samuel Mumaw moved his family back to Pennsylvania by 1878, because their daughter Lucy Mumaw was born in PA in September, 1878. According to the 1900 census Samuel J. and Mary A. Mumaw were the parents of five children, four of whom were still living in 1900. Agnes Mumaw born June of 1882 age 17, and Lucy age 21 still living with their parents in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and working as shirt makers. Their son John Livingston Mumaw married to Sarah Ellen Harrison, born Aug. 5, 1876 in Durham, England, (again these are my husbands maternal grandparents - James A. Mumaw) and living in Hecla, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
From the Civil War tombstone monument cards listed on Ancestry, it says that Samuel Mumaw was buried in the "Home for Insane", Washington D.C. I believe the cemetery known as St. Elizabeths Hospital (SEH) in Washington, D.C., originally was known as the Government Hospital for the Insane (GHI). It was established through the Civil and Diplomatic Appropriation Act of 1852, and admitted its first patients in 1855. Dorothea Dix, its founder and the leading mental health reformer of the 19th century, wrote the law that articulated the hospital’s mission "to provide the most humane care and enlightened curative treatment of the insane of the Army, Navy and the District of Columbia."
