Freeport (IL) Journal Standard, October 12, 1939:
Forreston, Ill., Oct. 12 --- Samuel W. Mumma, a resident of Forreston for three-quarters of a century, passed away last evening at 7:45 at his home, after a lingering illness.
Mr. Mumma was born Feb. 26, 1856 at Adeline, Ill., and was married in February, 1882, to Miss Nellie Cheeseman, who survives, as do the following children: Dr. Claude S. Mumma, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Susan Buckley, of Sterling, former editor and publisher of the Forreston Journal; Miss Marjorie Mumma, of Chicago, and Mrs. Gordon Swift, of Forreston. A brother, Frank Mumma, resides at Rockford.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at teh Lutheran church of Forreston, of which he was a devoted member. Rev. C. D. Kammeyer, of Polo, formerly of Forreston, officiating at the service. Interment will be made at White Oak cemetery.
Mr. Mumma was an employee of the Illinois Central railroad for 43 years, entering in 1882 and continuing as agent until 1926. At the time of his retirement a banquet was given in his honor at the Senate hotel in Freeport by members of the Agents' association and Order of Railroad Telegraphers and he was presented with a handsome watch charm. He was the oldest agent on the Wisconsin division at the time of his retirement and he received letters of appreciation for his work from many of the officials of the road.
