Walter Layman Mumma, 80, of 21211 Mount Aetna Road, Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at his home. Born April 17, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Daniel Gear and Teresa Mumma.
He was retired from Grove Manufacturing Co. in Waynesboro, Pa. He was previously employed with Folk and Miller Sign Company in Rockville, Md. He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Beaver Creek. He was a member of the Moose, Izaak Walton League of America and the Potomac Archers.
He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Mumma; one daughter, Robin Dawn Polk of Forest Hill, Md.; one son, Walter L. Mumma Jr. of Hagerstown; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gary W. Mumma; and 17 brothers and sisters.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery in Clear Spring, Md.
The family will receive friends on Friday at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.
