---------------------------
MOMMA, NICHOLAS
He passed away 10 April 1894. He had been quit ill for several days, but the general public had not known his case was serious. He had been at his duties in the bank only a few days ago, and it seemed impossible that he could have died so suddenly. He died a few minutes after 7:00 a. m. His illness was a complication of disorders arising from the grip and the results of an attack of pneumonia a few weeks ago.
His daughter, Mrs. J. P. Herrington, arrived from Kansas City, but a few minutes after he passed away. Nicholas Momma, was born in Wickrathberg, Prussia 5 May 1832, and was 61 years 11 months 5 days of age. When as a grown man, he served in the Prussian regular army.
He married Miss Gertrude Merzedus 15 Oct. 1854, and they came to America that same year. They lived in New Jersey for two or three years. Then they came to Chicago, where they lived for several years. He was engaged in mercantile business. They came to Kansas in 1869, locating first in Neodasha, then coming to Longton, Kansas in 1872, where they engaged in mercantile pursuits until 1875, when he was elected county treasurer of Elk county which office he held two terms, (four years) and conducting with honor and ability. He came to Howard, Kansas in November 1876. In 1877, in connection with A. F. Eby, he established the Elk county Bank. It was the first bank of the city and the following year with Mr. Eby and George W. McKey, they opened the Elk County stores.
He has with various changes been identified with the mercantile and banking business of Howard ever since and at the time of his death, the cashier of the First National Bank in which capacity he has shown business and banking talent of a high order. Be leaves a wife, a son Valentine and three daughters, Mrs. J. P. Herrington of Kansas City; Mrs. C. A. Baker and Miss Gertrude Momma of Howard. Services were at the home, conducted by the Lodge No. 155, A. F. & A.M. with Rev. Steele delivering the message. Burial was in the Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard, Kansas, with Masonic honors by the largest company of the fraternity ever assembled in Elk County, Kansas. The business houses were all closed and perhaps most largely attended of any in the history of Howard.
He was a public spirited citizen and popular and honorable businessman. He will be a loss to Howard and Elk county. He has been identified with every enterprise calculated to enhance growth of our city or the comfort and happiness of our people.
In politics he was a staunch Democrat and stood high in the councils of his party and was a late candidate for appointment as Council to Cairo, Egypt to succeed E. C. Little the Republican incumbent. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and a Knight Templar member of Abd-el-Kaker commander in Fredonia, Kansas.
