Note by Doug Mumma. I believe there is an error in Richard's book regarding the children of John and Rachel. In Richard's listing, he shows a child named Mary A. Mumaw being born 23 Feb 1830 and dying 21 June 1836. If one traces this family in the census, a Mary A. Mumaw appears in the 1850 census as being born about Feb 1850. I believe it is reasonable to assume that Richard made an error in Mary's birth year and it should have been 1850, not 1830 and I have changed the records accordingly. Likewise, another error was made in the birth of Margaret Mumaw. Richard lists her birth as 1840 and her marriage as 1846, which must be in error. Margaret can be traced through the census to 1900 where her birth is listed as August, 1831. Again I have tried to correct the births and birth order accordingly.
Another problem that occurs is John Mumaw and his younger brother, George, gave their children the exact same given names, so you end up with 2 Rachels, 2 Fannys, 2 Aarons, 2 Henrys, etc. One must be careful as to which belong to which family.
MUMAW. ? On the 13th of December, near Winesburg, Holmes county, Ohio, of a lingering illness. John Mumaw, aged 82 years, 1 month and 28 days. He was born in Fayette county, Pa., October 15th, 1805, and came to Ohio when he was 18 years of age, was married in 1830 to his now surviving wife, Rachel Barkey. Of their 14 children 11 are still living. Besides these, 42 grandchildren and 8 great.grandchildren [sic] remain to mourn our brother's departure. He united with the Church in youth and was always a firm believer and defender of its doctrines and practices. He was buried on the 16th. Services by Henry Kilmer and Michael Rohrer, assisted by J. M. Gillom, from John 14:1.
