Sanford Leroy (also known as "Sandy" or "Lee") lived in foster homes for much of his childhood. He was in the Army during World War II and was stationed at Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama during 1945. He was married twice before he met his third wife, Annie Elizabeth Jones, in the Summer of 1945 at a USO picnic in Anniston, Alabama. They married in 1945 and divorced ten years later.
In the early 1960s, Sanford Leroy moved to Memphis near his former wife Ann and son Lee, and he lived there for the remaining years of his life. Sanford Leroy had a variety of occupations. He was at various times a machinist, a truck driver, and a security guard. Sanford Leroy had also earned a private pilot's license in the late 1940s. In 1969, he died of a stroke while in a plane being flown by a student pilot.
