He was a Civil War veteran, serving from Feb. 11, 1862 - July 13, 1865. He served under Col. Baine in the D company of the 50th Infantry of Illinois.
Marriage found in Bk. 1, pg. 162 of marriage records of Lincoln Co., Oklahoma.
In the Lincoln Co. Oklahoma newspaper, dated Fri. 11 Mar, 1904, James and Ida are listed as owing back taxes for the last half o 1902. Mewmaw, J A $1.82 & Ida Mewmaw, $2.55.
The obituary in the SPARKS REVIEW, Sparks, Oklahoma, Fri. 2 Feb 1906 (vol.3, #40, Col. 4) reads:
"The Rev. James A. Mewmaw died at the Crescent hotel January 30 after a brief illness, age 62 years. He was a soldier in the Civil war and at the close, came west. For several years he was a resident of Lincoln county, Oklahoma, and a minister of the Methodist Protestant Church."
Then this item was in the PAYSON TIMES, Payson, Adams Co., Illinois, date not given.
"Uncle John E. Mewmaw received the sad news the last of the week announcing the death of his brother, James A. Mewmaw a resident of Sparks Okla. On the death Jan. 30, 1906 he was aged 61 yrs. 8 mo and 7 days. He leaves to mourn him a wife, one son, and two daughters, besides a host of friends in his home town. Mrs. Margaret Wasson of Payson and Mrs. R. Laurence of Medicine Lodge Kansas are sisters of the deceased. He also leaves on brother besides the one mentioned, W. L. Mewmaw of Milan Mo. Mr Mewmaw was a civil war veteran having served with Ill troops under Col Baine. He was also a member of G.A.R. He departed from these parts some twenty-six years ago."
