In the 1850 census, he is described as a limeburner.
In his will (LCA M-2-259) he describes his wife as Lizzie, indicating that he remarried after the death of his first wife, Catherine Dangler.

John Mumma died suddenly from apoplexy on Saturday evening, aged 77 years. Interment was made at the old Evangelical church on Wednesday. Revs. Guinther and Hottenstein officiated."
