"DMM" refers to Douglas Mumma ( Internet

(This is a quote from Alfred Muma)
"Alfred's grandparents were Jacob and Betsey who were natives of Germany where they were reared and wed" They immigrated from the Fatherland to the USA locating in Pennsylvania later moving to Canada where they died. - source notes from Kathryn (Muma) Cassells.
(GEM history): Research shows that Jacob Muma and his wife Betsy (probably Elizabeth) were born and married in Germany. By calculation, they were probably born about about 1750, as their first child on record was born in the USA in 1775. They apparently came to Pennsylvania and settled in Lancaster County. Since one of their sons was born in Frederick County, Virginia, which is just across the state line, it would appear that they spent some time in Virginia. From Pennsylvania, they moved to Buffalo of the Niagara District [N.Y.], and then went into Canada, possibly going into the Dumfries Territory. [George E. Muma (GEM) lists their first child as Samuel - born Sept. 10, 1775. The DMM database lists Samuel's birth date Sept. 10, 1784. There were supposed to have been two more daughters, but GEM history has no record of them.
** Research at the LDS Family History Center revealed that Jacob and Elizabeth had two girls in the family, but no record of given names could be found. Jean Muma's notes from the Brant County Historical Society list an Eve and another daughter, but no dates. The LDS fische Nr. 5028938 Page 15-1 lists the dates as abt. 1808 and abt. 1810. The dates are probably incorrect due to the age of Elizabeth the mother.

There has been much confusion about the Jacob and Betsy as to where they were born and where they raised their children. It has been suggested that they were born in Germany where they married prior to immigrating to America. Others say they were born in America. I have found not found compelling evidence to support either position.
The birth location of their children is also confusing, including whether all of these children are theirs. Census and death records only add to the confusion. The predominent birth locations listed are Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York. Most data suggests that the Canadian Mumas migrated to Canada around 1800.
DNA testing - 2 descendants of Jacob Muma (d. 1876) and 1 descendant of Samuel Muma (d: 1865), who were son of Jacob & Betsy, participated in the MUMMA Surname DNA project. From their results I can conclude that the DNA signiture of these men closely match the MOMMA ancestral haplotype "fingerprint" meaning they are genetic Mommas/Mummas. In fact, they closely match the haplotype of immigrant Leonard Mumma which raises the question, was Jacob Muma a descendant of Leonard Muma. After carefully looking at the children of Leonard and his sons, I do not think there is any place that Jacob Muma could be attached. So where does this branch fit in? I don't have that answer. It is possible that Jacob & Betsy did come to Ameria as immigrants and their entry was never recorded. There is also the possibility that Jacob descends from immigrant Johann Lorentz Momma who we know had children, but none of them have ever been identified.
