(George E. Muma (GEM) history): Samuel Muma born in Penn., or Va. Sept 10, 1775. Died in 1865 and buried in the Drumbo cemetery. Married Elizabeth Misner (daughter of Adam Misner) in 1809. [Elizabeth] born May 15, 1784, died 1868. Bible says born in Jersey State in 1790. [The spelling "Misner" and conflict in birth dates is from GEM history. The birthdates and descendency chart for Samuel and Elizabeth Muma, and spelling "Misener" are taken from the DMM database, because it is more detailed and up to date than the GEM history. The correct birthdate is yet to be determined - source Gordon D. Muma (GDM).]

The only evidence I have found for his birth place being "Virginia" is the writing in the book called the "Life of Christ"? I believe this writing says:
"this record is kept by Samuel Muma Sen. who was born September the tenth in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty four in the state of Virginia, America. Elizab Muma born May the fifteenth in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety. Jersey State America"
Some references suggest that this information and a listing of the children was kept in a bible. I called the current owner of the bible, John Ellis Muma and asked him some questions about these entries. These are the questions and his answers:
a) Is anything written in the Bible? No. It is just an interesting document to have.
b) What is the copyright date in the front of the Bible? Nothing. That page is missing.
c) What language is the Bible printed? English (Very unusual because all old Mumma bibles are in German).
d) Where is the saying and birth entires written? In a book called "Life of Christ", written by Rev. John Fleetwood.
e) Is there a copyright page? Yes, it says 1853, published by Derby and several others in Cincinnati and Auburn.
f) What language is this book written? English.
g) Does it appear that all of the entries were written by one person at the same time? Yes.
I really doubt that Samuel himself wrote these entries for several reasons. 1st, the entries had to be written sometime after 1853 when the book was published. At this time, Samuel would have been over 76 years of age . It would have been fairly unusual to buy a book at that age and begin writting in it. The only possible explanation would be that Samuel bought the book for his son, Samuel Jr. who was married about 1852 (one child born in 1853). The second and compelling reason for not believing that Samuel Senior made the entries is, as far as I know, Samuel was not literate. I understand in a War claim filed 16 Sept 1815, Samuel signed with an "X". He also signed with an "X" on am 1823 document where he was acting as an agent for his brother, John. John also signed with an "X". This is the case I would have predicted. For these reasons, I feel that the entries in the book were written by someone else, possible on Samuel's behalf, but probably not by him. Therefore, I must view the "Virginia" entry as suspect and this may have been as assumption on the part of the writer.
Also, it is interesting to note that Samuel's son, Nelson, ended up with the original book and bible and he was not the eldest living son. After Nelson received it, it was consistently passed from father to eldest son.
The 1880 and 1900 census for his son, Thomas list his parents places of birth as Pennsylvanina for his father and New Jersey for his mother.
The tombstone in the drumbo cemetery lists the following dates on the stone
S Muma 1786-1865
Elizabeth Muma 1794-1868
