REV. JACOB B. (JACK) MOOMAW SR.
1806--October 24: Jacob was born in Botetourt Co., VA. Usual sources give his birth year as 1806, and the marriage of his parents is listed as 1805. But, in his autobiographical sketch, he says he was born in 1799. He was trained in carpentry by his father.
1808--Father, Philip, bought 300 acres on McGee's Run, a branch of Craig's Creek, from John Bowen, and the family moved to Catawba. See Moomaw book for a picture of the homestead.
1827--Jacob indentured himself to an uncle, a tanner (perhaps Jonathan Christian?).
1828--At the age of 22, Jacob was ordained to preach for the Newlight Church. During his career, he married more than 500 couples.
1830--July 29: Permission slip to allow marriage, signed by John Fisher and witnessed by Henry C. Fisher (uncle?) and Harriet (Jacob's sister), was sent to the clerk. A Marriage Bond was posted with sureties of Jacob B. Moomaw and Henry C. Fisher.
1830--17 August: Jacob married Anna Fisher, apparently in Giles Co., VA. (No records in Botetourt Co.) Jacob assumed control of the tannery.
1831--Philip deeded 50 acres to his son, Jacob, and daughter (Elizabeth) is born.
1833--Son, Mark F., is born. Two years later, Katherine is born.
1837--Second son, John Fisher Moomaw, born in Giles Co., VA.
1838--Roanoke Co. established, in part from Botetourt Co. Jacob gives up the tannery to follow carpentry.
1840--Daughter, Polly Ann, was born. (Her son would later be raised by Jacob and Anna.) The family was listed in the 1840 Census.
1840--Jacob's father dies.
1842--Jacob's mother dies.
1846/48--Jacob is believed to have fought in the Mexican War as a sergeant in the 2nd Virginia Infantry. (Government stone in Sidney Cemetery) However, no records have been found at the NARA or the archives in VA, WV, or IN. (Farwell has his military service as the War of 1812, but Jacob would have been a young teenager at that time.)
1849--Jacob was recorded as paying taxes in Giles Co., but the family was not listed in the 1850 Census.
The family moved to Grant Co., IN, in 1849/1850.
By 1856, the family had moved again, this time to Sidney, IA. Jacob was an early settler in the area. He became a respected citizen and preacher, and in later life was known as Grandpa Moomaw.
1880--Jacob and Anna are listed in the Census as residing in Sidney. Also with them was their grandson, William Henry McClure, son of Polly Moomaw and Jacob McClure. He came to live with his grandparents after his own parents died. He later took the name Moomaw for himself.
1897--Jacob died in Sidney at age 97.
A full paragraph is devoted to Jacob in the "1881 History of Fremont County."

---------------------------------------------
MOOMAW, Jacob B., carpenter and joiner, P. O. Sidney; born October 24, 1799, in the state of Virginia, where he grew to manhood, was educated and married. His father was Philip Moomaw, born October 17, 1771, and died November 11, 1844. He was a carpenter and cabinet maker by trade, and from him young Moomaw learned his trade. When twenty-one young Moomaw indentured himself to his uncle, and for three years served an apprenticeship at the tanner's trade. He then assumed control of the yard, which he continued for thirteen years. He then entered upon his first trade - that of carpenter - until 1845, when he removed to Grant county, Indiana, to follow farming. In 1855 he came to Fremont county, and found a congenial home in the young city of Sidney, which he helped both to plat and to build. Many of the older houses in the town stand to attest the quality of his workmanship. He built the old seminary building, and the Herod hotel (now the Cromwell House). Mr. Moomaw has filled nearly every township office since his residence here; was thrice elected a justice of the peace, but would not qualify. For fifty-six years he has been a conscientious member of the Christian Church, and a minister in the same. He was married to Miss Anna Fisher, of Virginia, August 17, 1830, by whom he has five children living: Mark F., John F., Catherine, Daniel D., and Jacob.
