Not a lot is known about Joseph. Joseph was not a common given name for this particular Washington County, MD branch of the Mumma family. None of his uncle's children, who also lived in the area around Hagerstown and Sharpsburg, MD, were named Joseph so this given name is unique.
Joseph has not been found the 1810 census, shortly after the time his father died. He would have been age 24 in this census. It is likely living with another family.
Joseph married Margaret Beckley on 20 May 1816 in Washington County, MD. His age is listed as age 31 which would suggest he was born about 1785 (as expected).
1820 census, MD, Washington Co., ED 1
Males under 10 = 2 (David Mumma, b. 1820 and John Mumma, b. 1818)
............. 10 - 16 = 1 (unknown individual)
..............26 - 45 = 1 (Joseph was born abt 1786 so his age in this census would be 34)
Females 10 - 16 = 1 (unknown individual)
...............26 - 45 = 1 (Margaret was born between 1794-1804)
There is one person engaged in manufacturing ( Joseph's occupation is unknown)
It is unclear what happened to Margaret as Joseph married again on 24 Feb 1824 to Elizabeth Shafer in Washington County, MD. Possibly she died, but no burial has been found for her
Some of the following children are probably from the marriage to his first wife, Margaret Beckley.
1830 census, MD, Washington Co., 2nd district, p. 72
Males under 5 = 1 ( Solomon Mumma U96?, b. 1826)
............. 5 - 10 = 2 ( David Mumma, b. 1820 & John Mumma, b. 1818)
.............40 - 50 = 1 (Joseph was born abt 1786 so his age would be 44)
Females under 5 = 2 (Mary Elizabeth, b. abt 1829 - U97 & Barbara, b: ~ 1830)
..............30 - 40 = 1 Elizabeth, born between 1790-1800)
Joseph served as the administrator for Peter Warbel's estate. Peter died in 1824 and estate distributions were made on 20 April 1829 and 7 April 1830. Peter Warbel (or Verble) was his sister's (Barbara) husband. In 1827, Barbara left the area and migrated to Springfield, Ohio, with her other siblings in 1827.
There are several people who I have identified above as the children of Joseph. These children do not fit with any of the children of other Mumma descendants. It is possible that they don't fit, but I find it highly likely.
We have no knowledge as to what happened to Joseph after 1830, He is not found in the 1840 census of Washington County, MD. Probably died prior to that time and was buried in the Sharpsburg area.
The relationship of John Mumma (the son) to Joseph Mumma (the father) was recorded in a baby book for Marjory Mumma. It was written and dated on 29 December, 1907 in Forreston, IL by Susan E. Mumma , the sister of Marjory Mumma (born 19 January, 1904) Susan recorded their grandparents names as John and Susan Mumma and their great grandfather as Joseph Mumma. No great grandmother's name was recorded. This book is in the possession of Susan Swift who resides in Forreston, Illinois (2014). The existance ot this book was brought to my attention by William Dale Sims, the 4th great grandfather of Joseph Mumma. It is the only known, written evidence, that Joseph Mumma was the father of John Mumma or any of his other 4 chlldren.
The close connection of Jacob H. Grove with Joseph Mumma & his wife, Elizabeth Shafer and Hannah Kretzer is unknown. In the 1850 census, Barbara Mumma (daughter of Joseph Mumma & Elizabeth Shafer). Mary Mumma (other daughter of Joseph Mumma & Elizabeth Shafer) and her husband are living with Hannah Kretzer in the 1850 & 1860 census. Both Barbara and Mary are are beneficiaries of Hannah Kretzer's Will and Jacob H. Grove is named the executor.
